Artist Qayyum Chowdhury was born on March 9, 1932. Chowdhury is the major second-generation artist of Bangladesh. His country and his people are the key subjects of his paintings, coupled with birds, flower and rivers. His canvases are red and green, directly people by human beings wielding hatchets or with a gamchha wrapped around the head. He is perhaps most well known for his cover designs - but his significance as a painter is vast. The eminent painter was conferred with Ekushey Padak (Bangladesh's highest civilian award for contribution in the field of arts), Independence Award, Sufia Kamal Award, Shaheed Altaf Mahmud Padak, Imperial Court Prize, Tehran Biennale, Gold medal for book design from National Book Centre, Leipzig Book Fair Prize for Book Illustration, 6th Bangabandhu Award and the Sultan Padak.
